Anxiety

Anxiety is a normal part of life. We need to become anxious in order to perform at our best and be prepared for difficult or threatening circumstances. However, sometimes people develop an overactive anxiety response and find it difficult to proceed through life. At these times, excessive worries, apprehension, and fears stop people from completely engaging with life. This can affect both adults and children and can occur in the short term or for a longer duration.

The impact of the condition ranges from mild to severe. You may have heard of terms such as Generalised Anxiety, OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), Panic disorder, Separation Anxiety, or Social Phobia, which all describe different ways that anxiety can effect people. Our sessions will help you understand your own anxiety responses and find better ways to enjoy life.

Depression and Mood Disorders

Part of being a human is to experience changes in mood from time to time. Sometimes our moods are bright, open, and positive, at other times we can feel low, irritable, angry, and hopeless. Our moods are there to help us navigate the events of our life.

For some people, however, unpleasant moods remain for too long and start impacting on their enjoyment of life, their relationships, and their health. At other times people struggle with rapid or unpredictable changes in mood, and this can also affect many areas of their life.

As with anxiety, mood disorders range from mild to moderate and can affect people of all ages. Well known mood conditions include, Major Depressive Disorder and Bipolar Disorder.

How does a Psychologist help Anxiety and Depression?

I provide psychological therapies for people experiencing excessive anxiety or mood troubles. A standard program consists of ten sessions over a three to six month period.

During the first session we will discuss your life history and the ways in which anxiety or mood troubles have limited your enjoyment of life. The following sessions focus on the development of new strategies, and the final sessions focus on integrating these strategies into your life and planning for the future.

My therapeutic approach is based on Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) which has been repeatedly shown to be an effective treatment for anxiety and mood disorders .
